The Toolkit for Strengthening the Public Library Network of Cali aims to transform libraries into spaces for peace and social reconciliation. Given the high levels of violence in the city, these libraries are envisioned as key places for dialogue, citizen participation, and peaceful conflict resolution. Through participatory workshops, librarians, academia, and civil society have worked together to identify community needs and create solutions focused on social inclusion.
This toolkit provides tools to strengthen the infrastructure of libraries and their ability to promote social cohesion. Libraries not only offer access to books and the internet, but also serve as community meeting spaces, facilitating the exchange of ideas and fostering trust between citizens and the government. Furthermore, the project highlights the importance of libraries in cultivating critical and active citizens.
The document also emphasizes the need to train library staff to adapt to current challenges, such as digitisation and the development of new community services. Additionally, it proposes integrating libraries into the city's development and cultural plans, ensuring they continue to play a central role in Cali's social and cultural growth.
