Mind the Sound – Sound Creation and Environmental Awareness Workshop
In February 2025, the collective Mr. Klaje / Innovaser conducted the Mind the Sound workshop on Rathlin Island, Northern Ireland, as part of the interdisciplinary project Future Island-Island, funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Council (AHRC). This project aims to contribute to the design of a greener, more sustainable economy in Northern Ireland by engaging local communities, academics, and creatives in collaborative research processes.
Mind the Sound was conceived as an immersive experience combining art, music, and sustainability, with the aim of raising environmental awareness through sound. Inspired by the iconic London Underground announcement “mind the gap,” the workshop presents a sound-based metaphor in which the “gap” represents the disconnection between humans and nature, while the “sound” symbolises the voice of the planet calling us to action.
During the workshop, participants explored the relationship between body, environment, and creativity through activities focused on body awareness, the construction of instruments using repurposed materials, and the collective creation of rhythms and songs. This methodology fostered spaces for dialogue and reflection on recycling, responsible consumption, and reuse as everyday practices of resistance in the face of climate change.
